Our Community,

At the end of the day, the lives touched, the lives changed and the lives saved matter most to us.

At Horizon, we go to incredible lengths to impact communities around the globe where we live and work. From fostering a better learning environment in schools to helping create a sustainable future, our trailblazing commitment of purposeful giving is core to who we are.

Community Builders

More than a company, we’re community builders and changers who believe it is our fundamental responsibility to support the communities where we live and work, as well as our global community. It is why we are committed to organizations that share our common purpose: to transform and better the lives of those who need it most.

Pillars of Giving

We focus on four main pillars of giving: health care, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), environmental sustainability and innovation. Within these areas, we engage in purposeful giving through employee service, corporate sponsorships, events, grants and other forms of critical support.

How We Give Back Around the World

Horizon is focused on answering the universal call to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives of those in need by tracking our global impact against 11 of the 17 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Click below to learn more about the work we are doing.

We provide financial support and volunteer our time to help organizations that address poverty in areas where we live and work, including Focus Ireland in Dublin, Larkin Street Youth Services in South San Francisco and Lake County Haven in Illinois.

Our company and our employees are committed to supporting patients and their caregivers throughout their health care journeys.

Through our #RAREis program, we established the #RAREis Adoption Fund in 2019 in partnership with Gift of Adoption. In addition, we partner with Miracle Flights to ensure travel costs aren’t a barrier for patients who need access to specialized care, and we support Americares in providing disaster relief and community health services. We created and financially support an Access to Care fund with Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago, enabling low-income patients to obtain the prescriptions they need to manage their health.

We are proud to support Perspectives Math & Science Academy, a transformative Chicago-area school committed to holistic education by focusing on social-emotional learning and ethical leadership. Our support is extended through infrastructure improvement, employee engagement and programming through partnerships with After School Matters, the YWCA and NFTE.

In addition, we support STEAM education initiatives through the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition STEM Challenge, sponsoring the Illinois BioGENEius Challenge and Chicago Student Invention Convention. We also support St. Christopher’s Primary School in Dublin with a STEAM curriculum developed and taught by Horizon employees.

We are committed to increasing access to STEAM education for girls across the globe by providing full scholarships within the public health and bioinformatics degree programs at Asian University for Women. We also sponsor the United Nations Foundation Girl Up STEM for Social Good bootcamps and iBIO’s STEMGirls summer camp annually.

Additionally, we collaborate with the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association and Women In Bio to reinforce equality within the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. This effort includes the creation of and annual support for a startup challenge for women founders and CEOs of health care companies.

As documented in a 2019 AON report, Horizon is a fully pay-equitable organization, offering equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender or ethnicity.

We installed water filtration stations at Perspectives Math & Science Academy, providing students with access to lead-free drinking water.

In addition, we volunteered our time and the financial resources needed to build 200 water filtration systems that provided an entire village in Uganda with clean drinking water.

From recycling to relocating our global headquarters to a near-zero-emission building in Dublin in 2021, we are committed to furthering sustainable practices across our business. This includes a pledge to reduce our environmental footprint in four key areas: water consumption, waste reduction, GHG emissions reduction and sustainable supply-chain sourcing. To date, we have installed LED lighting and motion sensors for light and water use, as well as expanded recycling and composting initiatives.

We aim to foster the spirit of entrepreneurship within the health care industry and our respective communities. Our annual sponsorship of MATTER, a health care startup incubator, supports entrepreneurship and innovation in Chicago. Our CEO was the founding co-chair of the MATTER board, and employees are actively engaged with their ecosystem.

We are proud lead sponsors of an annual social entrepreneurship program at Chicago Ideas Week, showcasing the Bluhm/Helfand Social Innovation Fellows, as well as Chicago Innovation’s Student Invention Convention.

With Heifer International, we are investing in sustainable land use practices that will close the income gap for spice producers in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. We also support CapitalPlus’ Education Markets Impact Initiative, an innovative financing model that is expanding access to quality education in Sub-Saharan Africa.

We are the proud lead sponsors of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs’ Women, Equity, and Global Development Forum and Symposium. Each year, this event series convenes and engages diverse global perspectives to advocate for inclusive, sustainable, empowering and equitable global development practices.

We also partner with Pro Mujer, empowering women to serve as community health workers in Bolivia, which provides both access to income for the community health workers and improves health outcomes for families.

In partnership with UNICEF and the social enterprise Conceptos Plasticos, we provided financial support to transform plastic waste into a school in Cote d'Ivoire. We also established a product donation program with Americares, which helps patients and enables Horizon to reduce the environmental impact of excess inventory.

Through engaging with organizations such as the Business Council for the United Nations, we are able to further our collective impact for patients and communities.
